Arcade Fire remains one of my favorite Live bands.
Ever.
(look at em go, look at em go)
and the power's out
in the heart of man
take it from your heart
put it in your hand
is it a dream?
is it a lie?
i think, i'll let you decide

just what the doctor ordered
these NPR sessions are genius
this song is one of the best songs I've ever seen played live (each time is brilliant - my favorite was my first - at El Rey 2008) for reasons that would take me many paragraphs, a bottle of wine, and a few cigarettes to describe
nevertheless, here's a taste.
between the bars
I vividly remember the day Elliott Smith died. October 21, 2003. He was my favorite musician at the time. This was my favorite song (I love this cover. It's so haunting). He was on the DreamWorks record label. I was an intern for the company. I cried and cried and made a phone call to my best friend from our film library. Years later I wrote the lyrics to this song on the Figure 8 wall on Sunset. I didn't even know where we were. I was with a boy waiting for a cab to go to a concert. He was yelling at the cab company over the phone. And I was standing in front of the wall like a mesmerized child. It was October 2007 and there were still candles and flowers everywhere. What a beautiful artist.
i thought that that would keep my head on straight
found objects: mix tapes from years and years ago
jen gave me this song. im always quitting something.

kenneth reminds me of taking road trips with my parents as a kid. and i have no logic for this.

here he is covering (another) one of my all time favorite songs
dangerous beauty

promised to be one of the best collaborations of 2010
go get it.
Dark Night of the Soul, involves more than a dozen noteworthy musical collaborators as well as David Lynch, who signed on to create a 100-page book of original photography inspired by Linkous and Danger Mouse's music. As news leaked the buzz grew louder, and people were excited for a reason: Dark Night combined the best elements of a classic rock event with a very modern strategy. Links between the film, music, and art worlds were established, a ton of stars gathered together under the creative guidance of a couple of relative recluses, a regular old CD was marketed like a Hollywood blockbuster and packaged with a photo album for 50 bucks. - Pitchfork

Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zero's - A Take Away Show from La Blogotheque on Vimeo.
I have a deep abiding love for this song. Largely because I sang it to my sister driving back from my Granfather's funeral at four o'clock in the morning under a blanket of stars in the arizona desert - last fall. This goes out to our dear Dwalu, whom, we are sending away from our LA home this Saturday. The party will be one for the books. You'll be missed D.

bloc party for your block party
i love kele.
bloc party is one of my fave summer bands. maybe its memories of bouncing around in sticky hot mosh pits outdoors. been listening to the catalogue gearing up for Kele's solo album (out today). this track is number one in my playbook off the last album.
my heart hurts it's so magic.
speaking of so good it hurts. vintage.

Bardot Mondays // It's A School Night // currated by friend of mine and the greater los angeles airwaves - Mr. Douridas // This week starring Kenneth Pattengale - whom I met at a party a while back. he was plucking a six string on a balcony. in an impromtu sing along whose subject matter targetted largely upon the evening's goings on...and some dirty jokes.
last night he blew us away.

with Matt Beringer's baritone in full effect

The National / High Violet
Dear Matt Beringer,
You are one of the greatest live performers I've ever laid eyes and ears on. You can do no wrong in my eyes. You have done no wrong in my ears. In fact, you've done very very right by us all via your latest record.
I love you.
JKF
(eh, this band is alright)
and by alright I mean f*cking mind-bending heart-rendingly gorgeous.
If music were an ocean, I'd want to drown in The National sea.
That said - NEVER listen to Boxer snowed in alone in a cabin in New Mexico in the dead of winter. This cant be stressed enough. Or if you do - here's hoping someone confiscates your shoelaces.
Your Heart Stops Within You

THE DEAD WEATHER you're oh so alive.
One of my favorite bands. The new Album - Sea of Cowards - is triumphantly, irreverently, unapologetically, and predictably - a swan dive into the trenches of rock.
Alison Mosshart is genius. And easily my favorite contemporary female artist. Good luck not fallin in love with her.

GRO
Last night I had the privilege of attending a private showcase for GRO at the Troubadour. These kids are polished and radio friendly via records. And one of the BEST live band's I've seen. Josh Jenkin's voice is flawless. I was pretty blown away. Acoustic and Stripped down really makes you appreciate these kids don't have any pro-tools aces up their sleeves. They are the real deal. Sending much love and applause to my fellow Texans and friends. Check Em Out. See em Live.

break up your social scene

Forgiveness Rock Record // Broken Social Scene in typical fashion. Entered the studio with no material. Just an outline and a crew of massively talented folk. The result was their tell-tale trademark improvisational / cacophonous sound. Layers and layers and layers of that sound. And the pendullum is swinging into Yeasay-ing territory on certain tracks. They're branching into upbeat electropop then plunging back down to their mellow Feist-y roots. I love this band. Here they've cut a summer album. It's all it's cracked up to be.
Single = World Sick

ratatat like a wild cat
daydreaming

I listen to a lot of music at work. In fact, I can barely think without headphones on.
Today I have been enveloped by Beach House's Teen Dream. One of the best reviewed albums of the year so far, Beach House has been everywhere hipsters want to be for the past few years. You've heard them pumping out of Urban Outfitters or your local Silverlake Watering hole....For me, this is by far their strongest effort. Teen Dream, in my opinion, hurdles em out of trendy scenester indie blend into legit territory. I'm quite pleased with it. It's a great zone out album. Sweet and sounds like summer: despite a January release.
Download: Zebra; 10 Mile Stereo

Rocco DeLuca and the Burden - "When You Learn to Sing" Live from Rocco DeLuca Live on Vimeo.
A father can give you his wordsBut words are just symbols for things
And after he's gone
That's when you learn to sing
Nightingale, you stagger and fail
Is that how you've learned how to sing?
People in this life
I know you lie and deceive
It's not that I'm blind
I just wanted to believe
Under a Rocco
Getting my sea legs back.Rocco De Luca's MERCY I'm Lovin on right now. This album runs the gamut from dirt rock Black Crowes / Dan Auerbach territory (I Trust You to Kill Me) to mellifluous melancholy lullabies that'd make Billie Holiday swoon. How's that for an endorsement. Rocco's a man with a burden. It's stunning.
Buy the Album. Check out How Many Times (Live)
Touring w/ Editors is endorsement enough for Me

No idea what their name means. Must be a Denmark thing.

5 piece indie band from Denmark. Think Mew. Peppered with a little MGMT.
Their new record Sleep Mountain met with mixed reviews and touted as a "poor man's Arcade Fire / Neon Bible" is worth drawing your own conclusions about. Little harsh. Might not be scripture. But It's a good read.

One Jug of Wine / Two EPs

Bright Eyes/Neva Dinova, One Jug of Wine, Two Vessels (Saddle Creek) Originally released as an EP in 2004 and now spiffed up with four additional tracks, One Jug of Wine, Two Vessels finds friends and collaborators Conor Oberst and Neva Dinova in good form. Stylistically varied, the album features both the moody, melodic down-tempo indie chuggers that Oberst is known for, as well as more rocking, ecstatic tunes. Those four new songs are welcome extras: “Happy Accident” has a forceful backbeat and cutting vocals, while “I’ll Be Your Friend” features a blistering sax solo. —M. Jordan, BlackBook
This is a great EP. As a Bright Eyes enthusiast, I was hooked on this collaboration in 2004 and it's lovely to revisit. Tripped & Poison remain my favorite tracks. I Know You (new) quick on their heels. I'm a big Oberst sap. I love his broken voice and Dylan-esque lyrical rants. If you're on that page, check this out.

I'm not gonna preach about headliners. Anyone billed above size 14 font: is worth checking out. Here are my thoughts on the FINNNNE PRINT

Yann Tiersen - will be rad. You know Yann from the brilliance that is his Amelie score!
I mean....COME. ON.
Frightened Rabbit - Brothers from Scotland. Their third album, Winter of Mixed Drinks, is getting a fair share of press. Sunny music.
Download: Nothing Like You; Swim Until You Can't See Land
And now for the Tweens: the not too big/not too small print.
Jónsi - I cant stress this enough. IF YOU ONLY SEE ONE ACT. SEE THIS ONE. (see below post for further inspiration) The production value will be ridiculous. (Sigur Rós frontman. In case you've been under a rock)
Yeasayer - If you like their studio albums, just you WAIT til you hear them live. It's not a concert. It's a religious experience. One of the best live bands I have EVER seen.
Download: Sunrise; Madder Red
Mutemath - GREAT LIVE. Energy.
Download: Backfire; Pins and Needles
Miike Snow - will blow your mind.
Buy their whole album.
